ABOUT WITNESS BREAKER

Witness Breaker is an epic fantasy story set in Writ, a world where being witnessed can shape who—and what—you become. Deeds become stories, stories become Titles, and Titles grant real power. But every name the world gives you also carries expectations, gradually narrowing the options and possibilities person beneath it.

At the center of the story is Penn Walter, a sixteen-year-old from Firstmark who enters his First Inscription expecting the same thing every young person has been taught to want: a name that will define his future. Instead, the Hall of Mirrors refuses to settle on a single answer. What begins as one boy’s ceremony becomes a story about identity, freedom, responsibility, and whether anyone can remain more than the story the world has agreed to tell about them.

THE STORY

In Firstmark, every young person eventually stands before the Hall of Mirrors to receive a First Inscription: the name by which the Great Index recognizes the shape their life has begun to take. For most, the ceremony offers certainty. For Penn Walter, it reveals something impossible. Instead of one future, the mirrors show many—warrior, scholar, criminal, saint, corpse, ruler, and stranger—each as real as the next.

The failure of Penn’s Inscription draws the attention of nobles, priests, soldiers, and officials whose power depends upon a world that can be named and understood. As Penn struggles to survive what others insist he must become, he is joined by people confronting cages of their own. Together, they are pulled into a conflict that reaches far beyond one broken ceremony and toward a question at the heart of Writ itself: if the world can decide who you are, how much of yourself can truly remain?

THE WORLD OF WRIT

Writ is a world where observation has weight. People, places, and deeds become more firmly defined as they are witnessed, remembered, recorded, and repeated. From this process come Titles—powerful identities capable of granting extraordinary abilities while also placing expectations upon the people who bear them.

Veyrmark has built an entire civilization around controlling that uncertainty. Its laws, noble Houses, sacred institutions, records, and ceremonies all help keep reality ordered against the instability of the Drift beyond its borders. But beneath that stability lies a dangerous question: what happens when the systems meant to preserve identity begin deciding it instead?

ABOUT THE CREATOR

Witness Breaker is created and written by Shaun Richardson, a lifelong storyteller and worldbuilder with a particular love for epic fantasy, science fiction, philosophy, and stories that use impossible worlds to ask deeply human questions. His work is driven by the belief that spectacle matters most when it reveals something meaningful about the people standing inside it.

With Witness Breaker, Shaun set out to build a finite epic with a defined beginning and ending—one centered on identity, choice, responsibility, memory, and the tension between who we have been and who we may still become. The series brings those ideas together through dark fantasy, political conflict, character-driven drama, and a world where the stories people tell about one another can literally reshape reality.
