CHARACTERS

Penn Walter Portrait from Witness Breaker

PENN WALTER

Sixteen-year-old Penn Walter has spent his life in Firstmark’s Lower Civic Quarter expecting an ordinary First Inscription and an ordinary future. Instead, the Hall of Mirrors reveals something no witness system knows how to name.

Thoughtful, stubborn, and instinctively protective, Penn finds himself caught between the person others insist he must become and the possibilities he refuses to surrender.

MIRA THORNE

Raised within House Thorne, Mira has been taught that protection is both privilege and duty. Disciplined, perceptive, and fiercely self-possessed, she carries the traditions of her House without allowing them to decide every part of who she must become.

Where others look at Penn and see something that needs to be classified, contained, or explained, Mira insists on seeing the person standing in front of her. Her loyalty is quiet, deliberate, and never possessive—making her one of the few witnesses Penn can trust without surrendering himself to their expectations.

Vince Weatherwrite Portrait from Witness Breaker

VINCE WEATHERWRITE

Penn Walter’s oldest friend, Vince Weatherwrite has never had much patience for solemnity. Quick-witted, restless, and almost impossible to intimidate for long, he has a habit of meeting tension with a joke and danger with an answer no one else was considering.

Beneath the grin is a fierce loyalty to the people he considers his own. Vince may seem unpredictable, but when circumstances turn against his friends, he is often the first person moving toward the trouble rather than away from it.

RAYAEL CALDRIN

A rising hero of House Caldrin, Rayael has earned the name “Eastwall Champion” through real victories on Veyrmark’s border. Trained to lead, endure, and hold the line when others cannot, he has become one of the kingdom’s most visible symbols of strength and protection.

But behind the banners, songs, and carefully shaped public image is a young man who understands fear, exhaustion, and the cost of every order he gives. Disciplined, honorable, and quietly humane, Rayael is most himself in the moments when no crowd is watching—and when protecting someone matters more than being remembered for it

Malrec Voss Portrait from Witness Breaker

MALREC VOSS

Known throughout Firstmark as the Grand Accuser, Malrec Voss is a rising authority within Veyrmark’s sacred order and one of the most feared public voices of judgment in the capital. Calm, articulate, and relentlessly observant, he believes the witness system exists to preserve stability by defining every person in their proper place. To Malrec, uncertainty is not a mystery to be explored, but a threat to be contained.

Where others see possibility, Malrec sees danger. Penn Walter’s impossible First Inscription places him directly in Malrec’s path, and the Grand Accuser quickly recognizes that something deeper than irregularity is at work. Refined, patient, and deeply unsettling, Malrec stands as one of the clearest human faces of the forces in Veyrmark determined to decide what truth is allowed to remain.

OREN WALTER

Oren Walter is Penn’s father, a steady-handed ledger courier and binder who has spent his life moving through Firstmark with quiet discipline and little complaint. Practical, patient, and deeply dependable, he has built a home defined less by grand words than by daily acts of care, labor, and responsibility.

Though reserved by nature, Oren’s strength lies in his consistency. He helped raise Penn to value work, restraint, and endurance, offering a model of fatherhood rooted in presence rather than pride. In a world shaped by Titles and public witness, Oren stands as something rarer: a good man whose worth has never depended on being seen.

Lysa Walter Portrait from Witness Breaker

Lysa Walter

Lysa Walter is Penn’s mother, a seamstress, household mender, and neighborhood caretaker whose work quietly touches lives throughout the Lower Civic Quarter. Warm, observant, and practical, she notices what others miss—hunger behind politeness, fear beneath good posture, and the moments when praise or concern begins to feel like something more dangerous.

Her gentleness should never be mistaken for softness. Lysa is fiercely protective of her family and has little patience for anyone who believes authority gives them the right to define another person’s suffering. Where Oren protects through caution and preparation, Lysa protects through instinct, social perception, and an unwavering refusal to let the world decide who Penn is before he has the chance to decide for himself.

THE WORLD OF WRIT

Writ is a world shaped by witness. Memory, testimony, interpretation, and action do more than describe reality—they help determine what reality becomes. The more something is witnessed, named, recorded, and believed, the more firmly it takes its place in the world.

At the center of this order is the Great Index, the vast metaphysical record through which deeds, reputations, places, and identities can become fixed into Titles, laws, borders, and destinies. To most people, the Index is simply part of existence: sacred to some, civic law to others, and an unquestioned fact of life to nearly everyone.

VEYRMARK

Veyrmark and Firstmark Maps from Witness Breaker

Veyrmark is a kingdom built on the belief that order is survival. Ruled from Firstmark and surrounded by the unstable territory known as the Drift, it presents itself as civilization’s answer to chaos—a realm where law, record, witness, and inherited memory hold reality in place.

To the Veyrfolk, stability is more than political convenience. Roads, names, borders, citizenship, and history all depend upon the world remaining legible. The fear that these things might loosen again shapes nearly every institution in the kingdom.

FIRSTMARK

Firstmark is the capital of Veyrmark and the heart of its civic, sacred, and political order. Here, records become law, ceremonies shape identity, and the institutions responsible for witnessing the kingdom gather within the same walls. To outsiders it is a city of grandeur and legitimacy. To those who live within it, Firstmark is also a place where everything important leaves a record.

Its districts contain noble estates, government halls, sacred chambers, crowded markets, workshops, and the densely lived streets of the Lower Civic Quarter. At the center of much of Firstmark’s authority stands the Hall of First Witness, where young citizens undergo the ceremony that is meant to reveal the name by which the world will know them.

THE DRIFT

The Drift Image from Witness Breaker

Beyond Veyrmark lies the Drift, a vast and dangerous region where reality has never fully settled. Paths change, borders contradict themselves, and places can answer to more than one history at once. A road may lead somewhere different than it did yesterday. An old battlefield may remember several versions of the same war. A village can exist on one map and disappear from another.

For Veyrmark, the Drift is both shield and prison. Its instability makes invasion difficult, but it also leaves the kingdom surrounded by a world it cannot reliably map, govern, or understand. Generations of Veyrfolk have been taught to see the Drift as proof of what happens when order fails—and as the reason Veyrmark’s laws, records, borders, and traditions must never be allowed to loosen.

THE SIX HOUSES OF FIRSTMARK

The Six noble Houses of Veyrmark Image from Witness Breaker

For generations, six great Houses have stood at the center of Veyrmark’s political, military, sacred, and civic life. Each has built its identity around a different form of service to the kingdom, and each has cultivated traditions, reputations, and Titles that have become inseparable from the people who bear their names.

In Firstmark, the Houses are more than noble families. They are institutions—keepers of law, faith, protection, intelligence, warfare, and sanctioned violence. Their rivalries shape the capital, their alliances shape the kingdom, and the stories told about them can carry nearly as much power as the deeds themselves.

HOUSE VELL

House Vell is the keeper of sacred memory, holy legitimacy, and the names Veyrmark refuses to let disappear. In Firstmark, its influence reaches through vigils, memorials, funeral rites, sanctified records, and the religious traditions that determine which lives and deeds are remembered as sacred. Where other Houses defend the kingdom through law or steel, Vell gives that order meaning—teaching generations of Veyrfolk that remembrance itself can be an act of salvation.

HOUSE ORROW

House Orrow represents decisive action: duelists, executioners, champions, and those entrusted to bring dangerous uncertainty to an end. Within Firstmark, Orrow stands behind sanctioned combat, formal executions, martial judgment, and the grim understanding that some threats cannot be negotiated with forever. Its members prize courage, discipline, clarity, and the willingness to act when hesitation might allow chaos to spread.

House Quen Sigil Image from Witness Breaker

HOUSE QUEN

House Quen is the great legal and political House of Veyrmark, producing judges, diplomats, lawmakers, negotiators, and architects of civic order. Much of Firstmark’s political life bears its influence, from courts and contracts to boundaries, inheritance, disputes, and the laws that determine how citizens and institutions must coexist. Quen’s oldest belief is that civilization survives because judgment gives uncertainty a shape the world can live with.

HOUSE THORNE

House Thorne is built around protection, devotion, and the belief that those with strength have a duty to stand between danger and the vulnerable. In Firstmark, its members are celebrated as guardians, oathbound protectors, patrons of relief, and public symbols of loyalty in times of crisis. More than perhaps any other House, Thorne understands the power of a protector people can love—and the enduring stories created when courage is witnessed at its most personal.

House Sable Sigil Image from Witness Breaker

HOUSE SABLE

House Sable serves Veyrmark through secrecy, intelligence, hidden witness, and control of information too dangerous to move openly. In Firstmark, its influence is felt through intelligence networks, discreet investigations, rumor management, private testimony, and the quiet wars fought long before the public realizes a threat existed. Sable’s tradition holds that not every truth survives by being proclaimed; sometimes protecting the kingdom means knowing what must remain unseen.

HOUSE CALDRIN

House Caldrin is the military backbone of Veyrmark, renowned for battlefield commanders, fortress builders, monster-slayers, siege veterans, and generations of soldiers who have held the kingdom’s borders against the Drift. In Firstmark, Caldrin represents organized military authority, martial training, strategic defense, and the immense logistical machinery required to keep a nation secure. Its tradition values endurance above spectacle: hold the wall, preserve the line, and make certain there is still a civilization behind you when the fighting ends.
